About Us

The Bromley Branch of the British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC) was formed in 1955, making it one of the oldest and currently, with some 150 members, one of the largest branches within BSAC. The BSAC itself was formed in the early 1950's and is now the largest diving organisation in the world. In the UK, it is the leading authority on sports diving and it represents the sport on the Sports Council. Over the past 50 years the Branch has made significant contributions to BSAC and diving.

In 1960 Bromley were asked by the police to assist in the underwater search for a body in a lake, as they did not have any divers of their own. This led to the very first police diver unit being set-up. Other projects Bromley have been involved in have been the creation of an artificial reef made from car tyres at Bognor.

The branch meets at 8.00pm on Monday evenings at The Bridge Leisure Centre, Sydenham for diver training and for general swimming by members and their families. After training, members get together at the The Ex Servicemen's Club, Allerford Road, Catford, for a drink and to plan the next weekend's diving. Crystal Palace pool is used on Thursday evenings for specialist training.

Diving takes place most weekends during the diving season (April - October), along the South Coast, and during the Winter months local lakes and quarry's are used for diver training.

The branch has two Humber RIBS, both with Mariner 75's engines, fully equipped with GPS and Echo Sounder. For the last seven years the club has kept its two RIBS at Newhaven, in the Boat Park run by A. Pace Marine.

There are various diving holidays organised throughout the year including trips to Brixham, Wales, Ireland and also to various exotic destinations such as Cuba, Turkey, Malta, the Maldives and the Red Sea, Egypt.

Aside from diving, the branch also has an underwater rugby team, and boasts a comprehensive dry-meetings programme including discos, car rally and barbecue, paintballing, rambles, bowling, quiz evenings and the highlight of our social calendar the Annual Dinner and Dance held at Christmas.
